UTC, GMT, and Local Time: What's the Difference?

People say “GMT” when they mean “the time in London,” “UTC” when they mean “a timestamp with Z,” and “local time” when they mean “whatever my phone shows.” Those three ideas overlap, but they are not the same tool. This page separates them so a UTC to local time conversion stays honest.

Coordinated Universal Time

UTC is the civil time scale used as the reference for offsets. It does not observe daylight saving time. When software stores an instant, UTC (or a count of milliseconds from an epoch) is the usual backbone. Display is a later step.

Greenwich Mean Time

GMT is a time scale associated with the Greenwich meridian. In everyday UK winter speech, London civil time is often called GMT. In summer, London uses a seasonal offset and a different local name. Historically and in some standards, GMT and UTC are not treated as identical. If you need a zone, use Europe/London. If you need a scale without seasons, use UTC.

Local civil time

Local time is the date and hour a region agrees to post on clocks. It is UTC plus the offset in force at that instant in that IANA zone. Local time is what you type into the converter’s source fields.

UTC offsets and named time zones

An offset is a number. A named zone is a rule set that produces offsets over time. America/New_York can be UTC−05:00 or UTC−04:00 depending on the date. Asia/Kolkata currently stays on UTC+05:30. Writing “+5:30” without a date is an offset snapshot, not a zone.

Daylight saving rules and abbreviations

DST is one reason offsets move. Abbreviations such as EST, EDT, BST, CST, and IST are shortcuts and are reused around the world. Prefer the identifier America/Chicago over CST in any calculation. If you must use an abbreviation in prose, pair it with a city and a numeric offset for that date.

ISO 8601 timestamps

An ISO 8601 local timestamp with offset looks like 2026-11-06T10:00:00-05:00. That records civil time and the numeric offset. A UTC timestamp looks like 2026-11-06T15:00:00Z. The Z means UTC. Do not append Z to a New York local time; that would claim the wrong scale. RFC 3339-compatible strings follow the same idea. The formatter prints both forms and labels them separately.

Example: UTC to New York

Take 6 November 2026, 15:00 UTC. Convert to America/New_York. In current rules that date is after the US autumn change, so local time is typically 10:00 with UTC−05:00. Use the converter; do not assume every November hour is EST without checking.

Example: London summer versus UTC

Take 10 June 2026, 12:00 in Europe/London. That civil time is usually UTC+01:00, so UTC is 11:00. Calling it “12:00 GMT” would be the common mix-up this article exists to prevent.

Why IANA identifiers are useful

They pick a region’s rule set, including history, fractional offsets, and whether DST applies. They survive abbreviation clashes. They are what this site’s searchable selectors store. A table of cities is on the reference table; live clocks are on the world clock.

UTC to local conversion is the same engine as any other conversion: the source zone is UTC, the destination is a named zone, and the date is required. Local to UTC is the inverse. The formatter’s UTC line is the one that may end with Z. The ISO line with +05:30 or −04:00 is still local civil time plus offset, not UTC, even though it contains numbers.

GMT as a label on a website clock often means “London in winter” or “UTC+0,” depending on who built the clock. That ambiguity is why this desk refuses to treat GMT and UTC as interchangeable in every sentence. If a source document says GMT and the context is radio or aviation from decades ago, the historical meaning may differ from a 2026 API timestamp. For new writing, UTC plus an IANA zone is the clearer pair.

Local time is also easy to over-trust. Phones update zone rules when the operating system updates. Until then, a newly announced legal change can be missing. Meridian Hours uses the same browser database, so it will share that limitation. When a result matters, confirm the offset against a second source and against the date printed in the invite.

Abbreviations remain the fastest way to write a wrong time. CST can be Central Standard Time in North America, Cuba Standard Time, or China Standard Time in ordinary conversation. IST can be India or Ireland. If you already know the city, you do not need the letters. If you only have the letters, you do not yet have a conversion.

FAQ

Is UTC a time zone?

UTC is a time scale. The identifier UTC is also available as a zone with offset zero.

Can I use GMT as the source zone for London all year?

Use Europe/London so summer civil time is not forced to +00:00.

Why show both offset and zone name?

The offset is the math for that instant. The name is how you recompute another instant later.

Next: convert correctly and DST changes.
